The Roanoke Valley Chess Club, as part of its series of Grand Prix tournaments recently held its Winter Seasonal Special. This tournament was held on Saturday, February 21st in the Fellowship Hall of the Virginia Heights Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia. The Championship Section came with a value of 6 USCF Grand Prix points, with ALL MONEY GUARANTEED! The tournament consisted of two sections, played in three rounds. The time control was Game in 90 Minutes with a 5 second delay.

In the Championship Section, Original Life Master Klaus Pohl, who came all the way from Greenville, South Carolina, won the Championship Section outright, taking home the 6 Grand Prix points and the $125.00 prize money with a perfect 3.0 score.

(Incidentally, the tournament almost had another Life Master guest, when Andrey Chumachenko, of Charlotte, N.C., [FIDE rating over 2400!], nearly played in our tournament only to cancel at the last minute.)

Klaus Pohl handily defeated Michael Turner, Felix McCain of Lynchburg, and Bob Day of Rustburg.

In the Amateur Section, first and second prize was split between West Virginians Ed Grych of Princeton, and Gilbert Stone of Bluefield. Both players had a 2.5 point score. Third place, with a 1.5 score, was won by Brian Moore of Roanoke Valley.

In all, there were 6 players who won money! The club awarded 6 trophies in the two sections.

Special note : In the Amateur Section, Myron Cole won the Upset prize by beating a player whose rating was 766 points higher than Myron's ! Congratulations Myron !!
