On Sunday, May 19th, from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm, the Roanoke Valley Chess Club participated in the Grandin Village Block Party. This annual event is sponsored jointly by the Raleigh Court Civic League, and merchants and organizations in and around the Grandin Village area. This event is a one-day, fun-filled, public celebration of the organizations, neighbors and businesses of the Grandin Village area and their friends and supporters. This was the fifth year that the club has participated in this event.

As it is every year, the Block Party was held on Grandin Road, between Memorial Ave. and Westover Ave. SW. This long block was closed to traffic so that the participants would have a safe area in which to celebrate.

Many of the hot dogs, cookies and other goodies were served by members of the Raleigh Court Civic League and the Grandin Road Block Party committee. These items were all FREE !!

The RVCC members participated, playing everyone wanting a game. This year, the club generously allowed the public to use its four stone chess tables as well as two additional long white tables. These tables saw a lot of activity, with many visitors participating in the chess part of the celebration!

We also passed out basic information club cards at these tables. The RVCC gained some invaluable exposure and added to its contact list several possible new members and tournament players !

The club's participation this year was mainly co-ordinated by club President Mike Huff and by Chairman of the Board NM Rusty Potter. Wally Lewis helped Mike with setting up tables, chairs and other promotional materials. Rusty brought display easels and collected contact cards.

The skies this year threatened strongly to rain, but mainly just drizzled a bit, with only a very light shower at the beginning. Attendance was light, perhaps due to concerns over the weather. However, the sun finally did emerge from behind the clouds at the end - HOORAY !!

In summary, the Block Party was a big success for the RVCC, with lots of smiling faces all around !

We consider the Grandin Village Block Party to be an outstanding neighborhood event, as well as an important publicity-generating event for the club !
