On Saturday, December 6, 2014, the Roanoke Valley Chess Club held a holiday reception at its headquarters at the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op on Grandin Road, serving a variety of snacks and beverages. The club had a special guest of honor present: Chairman of the Board and National Master Russell ("Rusty") Potter. Rusty will be easing back into retirement from official chess club duties in 2015.

The RVCC recognized the many contributions of Rusty, especially those since 2007, when Rusty came out of retirement the first time to lead the club through some troubled and turbulent times. The club also paid tribute to its guest of honor with a Hollywood-style "roast," in which those present engaged in some good-natured lampooning.

Afterward, Rusty favored us with a simul on 7 boards. The master won 5 games, losing only to Richard White and young Josh Lewis, and then graciously analyzed the games of those who kept score.

Best Regards,

And Happy Holidays,
